Our History

Montessori International Children's House (MICH) was founded in 1985 by parents eager to continue their children's Montessori education after Montessori International Academy unexpectedly closed. MICH opened with seventy students in just two primary classes and a three-day toddler community. A third primary class was added the following year.

In 1986 we moved from Joyce Lane in Arnold to our current N Winchester Road site in Annapolis. The next year we added our lower elementary program with just twelve five-and-a-half to seven-year olds. At one time we held class in what we euphemistically referred to as a "mobile classroom unit" (trailer). The office was in the less than bright basement. Our little library consisted of cast-off Little Golden Books and encyclopedias in a small room off the kitchen.

In 1994 we opened an upper elementary class for our eight- to eleven-year-olds. Adding a second lower elementary came in 1999. At that time lower elementary officially assumed its proper configuration with six- to nine-year-olds and upper elementary consisted of nine- to eleven-year-olds. A sixth grade was added in 2004 and our first sixth grade class in 2005.

MICH is very proud to its achievements. Our toddler community now meets five days per week and serves 12 students. After a series of improvements the mobile classroom is gone and everyone is housed under one roof: three primary classes, two lower elementary classes, and an upper elementary class for nine- to twelve-year-olds. Our media center is located in a spacious, sunny corner room with window seats. The collection consists of over 9,000 items and checkout is automated. Our Extended Day Program includes a limited number of Toddlers. We have a staff of 25 serving 150 students. MICH has achieved national status as one of the top Montessori schools in the country and is the preeminent Montessori School in the greater Annapolis area.
